An Entrepreneur on the Brink (Of What?)

Ever feel simultaneously scared and thrilled?  You know, that kind of feeling when you leave your stomach at the top of the roller coaster track just as the car you're in descends into a free fall?

Add an annoying impending cold sniffle, insomnia, and craving for a grilled cheese sandwich on white bread and tomato soup like my mom used to make and you're describing me.

My contract at IBM is up in the air as of this writing.  That means I don't know if I'll have a job in 2007.  I've been a tech writer most of my adult life and I've loved it.  I don't hate technical writing.  I don't hate IBM, but I'm simply not engaged in the corporate world anymore. It's not where my heart is, but it is where the bulk my earning power has been for many years.  And I like earning money.  Preferably a lot of it.

I know that many an entrepreneur deals with this moment ...on the brink of change...the time when she must pick what she's going to be and just do it without looking back.  I'd rather have IBM make the decision for me.  I'm not quite ready to make it for myself.  I'm feeling wishy-washy.  This issue brings up lots of old personal stories, fears, failures, and unpleasant themes that run through my life like a big recurring zit.  Blech.

I may retreat from the blogworld for a few days...solitude is my way of dealing with big decisions and possible change.  Rest assured, your holiday shortbread orders are being filled by our little elves who love and appreciate all the business you've given to Vermont Shortbread Company this year because without your support for the past decade, dear customers and friends,  none of this would even be an issue today.

Thanks for keeping me on my toes.

Holiday hugs, Anniezee

Anniezee, My experience (and it is very recent) is that you will know when it is time. I believe you will know, in a very deep and clear way, when it is time to cut the cord.

It can be scary, but it is also very freeing to be the captain of your own ship (I couldn't resist)

Hi AnnieZee,

First of all, thank you for adding my Yahoo Creative Sage™ blog to your list of favorites! I've been on a short hiatus for the past month or so, but I'm back now after winning my sixth NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in a row!:-)

Second, congratulations on reaching this decision point in your life and business. From what I can see, you have made great strides in the past two-plus years, and it certainly looks like you're READY to be your own pilot! I will celebrate YOU by ordering some of your YUMMY shortbread in the next few days...it's so hard to decide which flavors, but I will choose some for a few of my holiday gift recipients--they'll love 'em!

My best to you in every season, and feel free to call or email me any time for some mutual entrepreneurial support. You ARE the CEO right now. YES!

Cheers,

Cathryn Hrudicka
